This time, it's the Man from Manila

2009-03-06

FrancisMYet another icon of the local music scene has gone on to join the legends in the great beyond.   "Master Rapper" Francis Magalona succumbed to multiple organ failure  “secondary to severe sepsis and secondary to pneumonia” this morning at 11:50am.  He was diagnosed with leukemia in August 2008.

For those not in the know FrancisM did the unthinkable for an artist of his genre when he played at Club Dredd in the early 90s   (this was also the height of the "hiphop versus metal/punk" wars).  He was also among the earliest artists to have blended rap and rock into a ballgrabbing machine ("Meron Akong Ano"), and has had collaborations with the Eraserheads, Planet Garapata, Perf de Castro, and other artists.  At the time of his death, he was recording material for his "The Sickos" project with Eraserheads/Pupil frontman Ely Buendia.

In related news, former NU107 DJ Joyce "Jaedee" Burton-Titular has sent word that the online radio station she's part of, "The Edge," will be having a 2-hour tribute on Wednesday, March 11, from 12 noon to 2pm.  If you have any photos with or best memories of Francis, please email them to her at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Oi ! Peace !
